Chapter 7

Evelyn leaned against the counter and stared out the window of the office. She could see Thomas, his head bent against the wind, walking into the barn. She sighed. He had been avoiding her all day. She glanced at her watch; it was nearly five and she was heading home soon. The other ranch hands would be eating dinner. It was the perfect time to speak to him.

She slipped into her jacket and hiked quickly across the yard to the barn. She heaved the large door open and peeked inside. It was quiet and looked empty and she shut the door quietly behind her before walking down the wide aisle. The barn was warm and almost steamy from the bodies of the many horses in their stalls.

She could hear Thomas’ voice faintly from the far end of the barn and she moved steadily towards it. She stopped to pat Autumn, smiling a little when the horse nuzzled her hair with its large, flat nose, and then continued towards Thomas. He was standing outside of Star’s stall. Star was one of the oldest horses on the ranch; as a child she had learned to ride on the giant but gentle beast. Most ranches would have sold him off long ago but her father had a soft spot for him and Star would live out his life here. She stopped and watched as Star leaned his head over the door of the stall and nudged Thomas’ chest.

Thomas murmured something she couldn’t hear and pulled a carrot from his shirt pocket. He handed it to the old horse who munched it contently as Thomas ran his rough hands over Star’s smooth, broad neck. His fingers began to comb out the tangles in Star’s mane as Evelyn moved forward.

Thomas paused and then continued to comb Star’s mane with his fingers. “Hello Evelyn.”

“How did you know I was here?” She hadn’t made a sound.

“Violets.” He muttered.

She smiled a little, secretly delighted that he recognized her scent. “How was your trip?”

“It was fine.” He inhaled sharply when she stood next to him, letting her breast press against his arm, and rubbed Star’s broad forehead.

“Good. You’ve been avoiding me today.”

“No I haven’t.” He lied.

“Yes you have.” She insisted.

He glanced quickly at her, his eyes lingering on her mouth, before looking away. “I was busy today.”

“Oh. What are you doing tonight?” She unabashedly leaned harder into him and tangled her fingers into Star’s mane, letting them brush against his.

“I – nothing.” He stammered.

“You should come by.” She gave him a slow and inviting smile. “I’ll be alone tonight.”

“Evelyn, that’s not a good idea. I’ve been thinking all day and I should not have come by your apartment last night. I know there’s this – this attraction between us but I’m ten years older than you.”

“So?”

“So I’m an old man compared to you.”

She scoffed. “Thirty-eight is hardly an old man Thomas.”

“It’s not just that. Our parents used to be married for God’s sake. I’m your stepbrother.”

“You were – twenty years ago.
